Sumptuous seafood suppers at Sam’s on the Beach near Fowey
Tucked away on Polkerris beach, at the bottom of the hill, just nestling in the sheltered cove is a little foodie haven I doubt you would ever know is here if I weren’t to have mentioned it. Aptly named Sam’s on the Beach, it’s housed in a converted RNLI lifeboat hut with clever interior design maintaining many of the original features. All the tables look out to sea and the huge bay windows open up directly onto the beach where Sam’s VW camper is resting – serving cocktails out the back on a surprisingly warm early spring evening.
Sam’s is renowned locally for the great food, great music and the fantastic atmosphere. They specialise in seafood (freshly caught in Fowey) and pizza cooked to order in a rather magnificent wood fired pizza oven. Relaxed gluttony is an absolute must here.
On the chef’s recommendation I went for basque cataplana: a seafood spectacular cooked in a sealed dish. It was choc-full of mussels, cockles, clams, tiger prawns, chorizo, smoked bacon and a slug of wine. I got messy fingers dunking doorstep slices of crusty bread and it was the perfect supper along with a large glass (or two!) of white rioja.
I’m waiting for another sunny spring afternoon to venture down to Polkerris and just chill out by the sea eating the freshest of produce in this hidden idyll.
